Under the laws of the United States, there are generally two means in which an alien can become a U.S. permanent resident: 1) via sponsorship by family member; and 2) via employment sponsorship. The categories of family and employment sponsorship are as follows:

FAMILY-SPONSORED PREFERENCES

  IMMEDIATE RELATIVE     Spouses and parents of U.S. citizens
FIRST     Unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens
SECOND     (a) Spouses and Children under 21 of U.S. permanent residents
(b) Unmarried Sons/Daughters 21 and older of U.S. permanent residents
THIRD     Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens
FOURTH     Brother and Sisters of adult U.S. citizens

EMPLOYMENT-BASED PREFERENCES

FIRST     Priority workers:
(a) Aliens with extraordinary ability
(b) Outstanding professors & researchers
(c) Managerial or executive transferees
                             SECOND     Members of the professions holding advanced degrees or persons of exceptional ability
THIRD     Skilled workers, professionals, and other workers
FOURTH     Certain special immigrants
FIFTH     Employment creation (investors)
