Our office has five attorneys and is located in downtown San Francisco, California. Founded in 1973, Edward C.Y. Lau's law firm was one of the first Chinese owned and Chinese speaking law firms in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our clientele is 70% Chinese. Many of these clients do not speak English. Therefore, we have attorneys and other personnel who are multi-lingual in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and/or Taiwanese.

All of the attorneys at the Law Offices of Edward C.Y. Lau speak English as their first language. Because of

this, the firm has gained a reputation within the Chinese community as being competitive against the English speaking, non-Chinese law firms. You may only speak Chinese and find solace in dealing with a Chinese-speaking lawyer. But is this the best lawyer for you? You should look into the future and ask yourself, "will this lawyer be the best advocate for me in a U.S. Courtroom?" Does the lawyer speak English fluently? Was the lawyer raised in the United States? Was the lawyer educated in a U.S. law school? How much experience does the lawyer have? These are the types of questions you should ask yourself in selecting the Chinese law firm who will fight for your rights before the judge and jury.

Furthermore, you may be willing to pay for the best non-Chinese law firm. But is this the right firm for you? You may need a lawyer who is also Chinese. Often culture, mentality, customs, language, and simply a non-Chinese appearance can stand as a barrier for non-Chinese law firms when dealing with Chinese people. Our law firm can help bring a favorable rapport and can lend added insight in such dealings.

For our larger cases, our practice philosophy of the firm is to take a "team" approach to our cases. Typically several attorneys are assigned to a cases to work together as a team. As the senior and most experienced attorney in the firm, Edward C.Y. Lau is always the leader of the team. This leads to more creative and better thought-out legal theories and arguments. Therefore, the client is not represented by just a single attorney, but an entire firm.
