The INS announced that it removed 171,154 criminal and undocumented aliens during the period of 10/1/97 to 9/30/98. This was the fifth consecutive year of increased removal figures. 56,011 criminal aliens were removed which averaged 1,077 criminals per week. The following categories accounted for most of the criminal alien removal:
The INS said that the removal figures include only those removed on a final order of removal issued by an Immigration Judge or Immigration Officer. The figures do not include an additional 78,928 aliens who were allowed to depart voluntarily after being charged with a violation.
2. New Policy Regarding Copies of Documents The Immigration and Naturalization Service has changed the policy requiring submission of original documents or certified copies of documents with applications and petitions. You may now submit ordinary legible photocopies of the original documents required, including Naturalization Certificates and Alien Registration Cards. Please submit copies of both sides of documents. You may be required to present the original documents during any subsequent contacts with the Service. The following statement must be signed and dated by either the applicant, the petitioner, or the attorney, and submitted with each petition and/or application. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Copies of documents submitted are exact photocopies of unaltered original documents and I undersand that I may be required to submit original documents to an Immigration or Consular official at a later date."
